Why this petition matters

Started by Sarah Parsons

Artificial food dyes are added to a slew of products ranging from fruit snacks to juices to cereals. Food manufacturers put more than 15 million pounds of synthetic dyes into foods and beverages every year. But according to a new report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), all those dyes can cause cancers, allergic reactions, and hyperactivity.

The FDA's own former acting commissioner said in 1985 that the dye Red 3 can induce cancer. Despite its known health risks, food manufacturers use more than 200,000 pounds of the substance every year.

Demand that the FDA take consumers' health seriously. Tell the agency to ban synthetic food dyes and encourage food manufacturers to use all-natural coloring.
